The warranty on the A4 is going out in June, so it'll finally be time to get the TB, water pump, etc. taken care of.

There's at least a couple other 1.8T owners on here - just looking for some general tips or advice.  Probably won't be doing this ourselves, since neither my dad or I are very mechanically inclined.  We might have someone that can help us do it for a reasonable price, though.

Here's the kit I'm looking at, by the way: http://www.purems.com/products/product.php/II=1151

I was just about to post the same question... I'm nearing 70K miles and know that it's really important to get this done. Anyone know of good shops to get this done at? Looking for the cheapest place to get it done that is going to do a good job at the same time!

Yeah, you should definitly get on that. Most people try to play it safe and get it around 65K, even though the manual says something around 80-85k, I think. Like Bill said you don't want to risk blowing your engine.

I am so glad that the benz and the e46 have timing chains and not belts. The e30 was just done 5k miles ago right before I bought it. I feel for you guys timing belts are an expensive pita.

Hell ya it's a pita! If you don't do it your shit out of luck eventually...So gotta shell out a lot of money in order not to shell out a whole lot of money in the long run  Roll Eyes

But since its gotta be done...where do you guys recommend going  Huh?

I remember on the Audi TT, in the book or any literature, it stated that the TB should be done at 110,000 miles, but almost every TT guy knows that the 1.8T should be done no later than 60k and I had mine done at 73k and it was just about to go - I got lucky.

I would suggest get it done ASAP, like now!

In my BMW, I am blessed to have a timing "chain" and not a belt Smiley

get this kit: ultimate (whatever your car is)
http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?make=Audi&engine=1.8T&model=B5%20A4&submodel=Quattro&category=Engine

You see; here's what you want to do. If possible get home before your parents, pull the car into the garage backwards, tear the whole front end off, remove belts/tensioner, timing belt cover, and then step back and relish in all the fantastic work you've just done. Next, just wait for your parents to get home. Now what you've accomplished here is totally rendering your car useless in addition to your parents garage, this ultimately entraps them to have to purchase the parts because chances are they're going to want to get that pile out of there.  The best part about this approach is your parents will respect your initiative, and chances are you'll get money quicker then you could on your own.

as far as resources, there are plenty out there.

LOL.  Just maybe... Grin

I posted the ECS kit on AF when it was on-sale, because I thought I might just go ahead and get it, but then I had the other one suggested to me.  So I don't know which one I'll get - I've heard good things about both of them.

The simple answer to that... get them both, then put them both in a cage and have them battle to the death, which ever comes out a live... thats the one you pick.

EDIT: Oh wait you're talking timing belts, not finding cage fighting scorpions. Disregard that last statement.

I changed mine @ 75k. I was scared as hell that it would go at any moment. The belt was still in real good shape when it came off. I bought an ECS kit and brought it to my local guy. I think it was about $550 total to have done.

I read Renn-Art has some winter specials. They do a lot of checks and replacements all for $450. including replacing the timing belt and tensioner. Thats why I cannot buy Pauls tires at the moment. Mines going in Id say about two to three weeks from now.

Then the new wheels/tires come in late April, and the six gets new tires and a rear deck paint job at the same time. Its got to be top notch for HIN and the SE sharkfest.
